Daniel S. Connolly
Managing Partner, New York
Daniel Connolly is the managing partner of Bracewell's New York office. He is a trial and appellate attorney with a background that includes high-profile positions in New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's administration and business consulting experience in regulatory compliance and crisis management and recovery. Mr. Connolly's practice focuses on representing clients in such diverse industries as banking, construction and pharmaceuticals in a wide spectrum of white collar defense and regulatory compliance investigations, as well as class action and complex commercial litigations.
In addition to representing clients in federal and New York State trial and appellate courts, Mr. Connolly regularly appears before numerous federal departments and agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, as well as various state investigatory and enforcement agencies.
Mr. Connolly began his legal career as a prosecutor in the Office of the Manhattan District Attorney, where he served for eight years. During his tenure as an Assistant District Attorney, Mr. Connolly tried more than 60 cases to verdict, including homicides and other complex criminal matters, and was involved in the prosecution of a number of controversial cases that garnered significant national attention, including the Tompkins Square riot case.
After his time as a prosecutor Mr. Connolly served as Counsel in the Administration of New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. In that capacity, he was responsible for all major litigation undertaken by and against the Administration, and serving as a key policy advisor for the Mayor. During this tenure, among many high profile matters, Mr. Connolly represented the City of New York in litigation against the Ku Klux Klan in American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan v. Safir, successfully limiting the ability of the Klan to parade anonymously in New York City. The matter was litigated before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court over the period of eleven days.
Mr. Connolly joined Bracewell in 2005 and assisted in the opening and development of the New York Office. He has represented major corporations and senior executives in an array of criminal or regulatory matters and has served as compliance and ethics advisor to companies and Boards of Directors. During his time at Bracewell, Mr. Connolly has represented such clients as JPMorgan Chase, N.A., StructureTone, US Bank, Iberdrola (now Avangrid), Overstock.com, Purdue Pharma, Pfizer, McLane Company, MatlinPatterson Global Advisors, Pier 1 Imports, LS Power Development, Xerox, Bellco Drug Corporation, Bank of New York, Halcyon Asset Management, Kinder Morgan, Inc., L-3 Communication, Wynn, Bass Pro, Inc., United Technologies Corporation, City of Harrisburg, Spectra Energy, Decision Sciences Corporation, Optim Energy LLC, VF Imagewear, Inc. and ADCO Electric & Communications.
Mr. Connolly is an experienced public speaker who has addressed both professional and business groups on such topics as governance and regulatory compliance and the role of in-house and outside counsel in a corporation. Mr. Connolly has been a guest lecturer at Hamilton College, serves on the Criminal Justice Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. and is President of the Board of Trustees of St. David's School in New York City.
