Bernadette Stewart


Ben is an energy lawyer, with a particular focus on the oil and gas sector. Ben has advised clients on the development, sale, purchase and financing of oil and gas assets across the value chain, from wellhead to market. Ben has particular experience in relation to African transactions, having advised on deals in over 25 jurisdictions across the continent.

Representative Matters

Genel Energy on various matters in Kurdistan, including the acquisition of OMV’s interest in the Bina-Bawi Block, thecommercialisation of the Miran and Bina-Bawi gas discoveries, crude transportation and marketing arrangements and the supply of gas to the Dohuk power plant.

Genel Energy on its country entries into Malta and Somaliland and the charter its deepwater drilling rig.

Impact Oil & Gas on the expansion of its African portfolio, including acquisition of upstream blocks in Gabon, Namibia, the Senegal-Guinea Bissau AGC and Guinea Bissau.

Hunt Oil on gas commercialisation arrangements in Benin.

Ophir Energy on the negotiation with the Government of Tanzania for the commercialisation of its natural gas reserves as LNG through the development of Tanzania LNG and the subsequent farm-out of a majority stake in these assets to BG.

Ophir Energy on the negotiation of licences and acquisition and disposal of assets in Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Senegal-Guinea Bissau AGC, Madagascar, Uganda and DRC, as well as the public takeover of Dominion Petroleum.

Caracal Energy on crude sales and transportation arrangements in Chad and Cameroon.

Maersk Oil on its acquisition of a stake in the Sarsang field in Kurdistan and the Chissonga development  in Angola.

BP on the US$6.5 billion pre-export financing of its Angolan and Azeri producing fields.

GdF Suez and SNH on the development of Cameroon LNG.

Clients in relation to the acquisition and disposal of the Grangemouth, Coryton, Lavera, Teesside, Stanlow, Heide and Hamburg refineries and crude and fuel commercialisation arrangements around these facilities.

Clients on the development and financing of gas fired power plants in the UK, continental Europe and Africa.
