August 1, 2006

AUSTIN—(August 1, 2006) W. Stephen Benesh, managing partner of the Austin office of Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, has been elected as the new president of the Austin Bar Association and will be serving a one-year term.  He took office in July.

Benesh is the first Bracewell attorney to be elected president of the Austin Bar Association, which has more than 3,400 members and has served the local legal community for more than 113 years.  He is also the firm's first attorney outside the Houston office to be elected to lead a local bar association. Benesh's longtime service to the Austin bar and legal community follows a long Bracewell tradition of commitment to bar service.  Joining Benesh in his high-profile year of service is partner Glenn Ballard, who took the helm of the Houston Bar Association also as president this summer.  Ballard is the seventh attorney from Bracewell to be named as president of the Houston Bar.

Benesh has served on the Austin Bar Board of Directors since 2001.   He has twice received the President’s Award as the Austin Bar's Outstanding Director and Outstanding Committee Chair.  Benesh is a Master of the Robert Calvert American Inn of Court.   He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Dripping Springs Independent School District and on the Board of Directors of Leadership Austin.

Benesh’s practice focuses on litigation, general business and technology matters.  In 2005 and 2004, he was named among the "Best in Business Law" in Central Texas by the Austin Business Journal.   The Austin Business Journal also named him as one of seven "People to Watch" in 2006 and honored him as one of the "Top Five Attorneys to Watch in Central Texas" in 2003.

Benesh received his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1987, and his bachelor's in business administration from The University of Texas at Austin in 1984.
