Robert L. Clarke Elected To Mutual Of Omaha Board Of Directors
February 17, 2009
Houston, TX (Feb. 17, 2009) -- Bracewell & Giuliani LLP Senior Partner Robert L. Clarke has been elected to the Mutual of Omaha Board of Directors, Chairman and CEO Daniel Neary announced.
Mr. Clarke is Bracewell's founder of its global financial services practice, where he assists banks in matters involving state and federal banking laws and regulations and compliance with requirements of supervisory agencies, including the management of regulatory risk in day-to-day operations, mergers, acquisitions, and strategic planning.
In 1985, President Ronald Reagan appointed Mr. Clarke U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, where he supervised approximately 5,000 nationally chartered commercial banks accounting for approximately two-thirds of the assets of the U.S. commercial banking system. He was reappointed by President George H.W. Bush, serving until 1992.
"Bob Clarke has a wealth of banking, legal and management experience that will add a valuable dimension to the Mutual of Omaha Board of Directors. As banking becomes a more prominent aspect of Mutual of Omaha’s business, we will rely on his perspective, as well as that of our other distinguished directors, as we work to achieve our strategic vision in an increasingly competitive and highly regulated environment," Neary said.
As a result of his service as Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Clarke was also a member of the boards of directors of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Resolution Trust Corporation, organized in 1989 to deal with the large number of insolvent savings and loan associations and their assets. In addition, he was a member of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, serving as its chairman for two years. He also served as vice chairman of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation Board of Directors.
Mr. Clarke has served as a consultant to the World Bank, as senior advisor to the president of the National Bank of Poland and has participated as an advisor to the governments of Hungary, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Latvia, Romania, Kazakhstan, and Hong Kong in their bank supervisory operations.
Since April 2004, Clarke has been a member of the board of directors of the Dubai Financial Services Authority, which is the regulator overseeing the operations of financial services providers licensed and operating in the Dubai International Financial Centre. In 2007, Clarke was named to the board of Omaha Financial Holdings, Inc., Mutual of Omaha’s banking subsidiary.
