SPOTLIGHT ON BRACEWELL senior counsel Kay Bailey Hutchison

On February 24, the Texas State History Museum Foundation honored Bracewell LLP Senior Counsel Kay Bailey Hutchison with its History-Making Texan Award at the 2016 Texas Independence Day Dinner, noting her “contributions to the state and the nation  have been truly historic and exceptional in scope and nature.” 

More than 450 business, political and community leaders attended the event to honor Senator Hutchison and television journalist Bob Schieffer.  Past award recipients include former President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush, former President and Mrs. George W. Bush, Walter Cronkite, Dr. Michael DeBakey and the Hon. James A. Baker III.

Senator Hutchison represented Texas in the  U.S. Senate for 20 years before stepping down in 2013, when she joined Bracewell.  She had been elected both Vice-Chair of the Senate Republican Conference and Chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, making her the fourth-highest ranking Republican senator. 

Prior to her Senate service, she was elected Texas State Treasurer in 1990. In 1972, Hutchison became the first Republican woman elected to the Texas House of Representative.
